Make your very own quilt from start to finish! Join Ashley in this 5-week series, where she will walk with you through every step of creating your unique rendition of the throw-size version of the Adventureland pattern by Suzy Quilts. Each week, there will be a 2-hour classroom portion with instruction. Even though the formal portion of the class will conclude at 11 am when the shop opens, you are welcome to stay and continue working on your project. In terms of sewing skills, the only requirement is that you have a basic understanding of how to use your sewing machine (threading, loading the bobbin, etc.) and brush up on these skills prior to week 3.
Dates: January 10, January 17, January 23, January 30, and February 6 (In the case of inclement weather requiring cancellation of a class, February 14 will serve as a make-up date).
Prior to the first class, you will need to purchase the Adventureland Quilt Pattern at Adventureland Quilt Pattern (Download) - Suzy Quilts. We will review all required fabric and quilting notions at the first class, and a 15% discount will be applied to the purchase of these items that day.
Bringing your own machine will help you become comfortable piecing and quilting at home and is required. It is needed for weeks 3-5.
Week One: In the introductory week, we will review the fabric specifications of the quilt pattern, color theory, types of quilting fabric, and available resources to help you choose your fabrics. We will also review the list of needed supplies, types of batting, and approaches to choosing backing fabric and binding. The only supply you will need is the quilt pattern, either printed or pulled up on your device.
Week Two: During the second week, you will bring your chosen fabrics with you. We will focus on prepping, cutting, and labeling your fabric. We will also dig into the pattern from start to finish and review common quilting terminology. No machine required.
Week Three: Time to bust out the sewing machine! Starting with some scrap fabric from the shop, we will focus on perfecting our seam allowances and seam pressing. Once comfortable, we will jump into piecing our quilt top.
Week Four: Our quilt top is finished! For week four, we will again use some scraps to practice basting methods and machine quilting techniques before jumping into the real deal.
Week Five: Next up: binding! For week five, we will prepare our binding and use our sewing machines to attach it to the quilt top. I will then show you my favorite ways to finish off the binding, which is done by hand via either big stitch binding or invisible stitch binding. Resources on finishing binding using a sewing machine will be provided. We will also discuss quilt labeling and washing/care instructions.
